Adopt a Pet Rabbit Part 2: Rabbit Care

Part 2 of 2 -- in the first post we talked about rabbits being available for adoption at local shelters and how a rabbit can enrich your household! 

Rabbits can be kept in a cage. Most owners will litter box train the rabbit in the cage, after the rabbit is litter trained and the home is rabbit proofed, the rabbit can become a “house rabbit” and set free in the home. Normal rabbit behavior does consist of chewing, digging and scratching, so if you want to keep your rabbit in a roomy cage or gated in a corner, there is nothing wrong with that.

This is a very exciting time in animal welfare, people are starting to become aware of the pet overpopulation problem and are turning to animal shelters and rescues instead of breeders, to adopting a pet in need instead of supporting the proliferation of new pets.

We know that the animal shelter is the best place to start looking for a new pet, but did you know that they have a lot of other animals besides cats and dogs available and in need of a new home?

Having a pet enriches our lives in many ways.  It’s funny because a pet will never contribute one single cent to help pay the rent or to put food in their belly, they’ll never pick up a gallon of milk or even sweep up the fur they shed, what they give to us is completely intangible, if you love animals, having them really improves your quality of life!

Pets Teach Kids Responsibility

Someone, who I was close to, called me up to say that she wanted to get rid of her daughter’s rabbit. Her nine-year old child was no longer interested in caring for the rabbit because she got a cat, and she liked the new pet better.

This person knows that I write about pets and wildlife and wanted to know if I knew of a place where they could unload the pet. I told her that replacing one pet for another is a bad lesson to teach a child, and that my site, Pet News and Views doesn’t list adoptable pets. My site covers animal welfare and pet care.

All Animals Need Our Love

When I was 13, I took zoology classes at the Bronx Zoological Society. I grew up in the Bronx, and went to the zoo every Saturday to learn about animals. In the summer, when I graduated from the program, I had a choice to either volunteer at the Bronx Zoo or the Central Park Zoo.

Rabbits are pets, too

And, just as we don't recommend giving pets at other holidays, we don't recommend adopting a bunny just because it's Easter.
