One Cat Blogger’s Glimpse into the Future

“Why did they invite a cat blogger?” I got this question a dozen times last week when I told friends and family that Ford had invited me to their annual technology conference in Dearborn. I even asked the question myself.

After all what could a cat blogger contribute? What was in it for Ford?

Ford's Futuring and Trends Conference is an interactive immersion into how Ford's innovations, technologies and philosophies, in alignment with top consumer influences, are shaping the future. Renowned thought leaders (including Malcolm Gladwell, Ed Begley Jr. and Joel Garreau), helped shed light on how Ford's vehicles and technologies are linked to global trends.

I’m a pet sitter who has lived in the D.C. area since 1963, and wanted to say "Hah, ya'll!" (even we Northern Virginians can have a twang). It's breaking my heart that I can't come to BlogPaws 2011. But I wanted to tell you a few things about the area.

Traffic
The D.C. area is infamous for heavy traffic, but it eases off a bit in August. Nevertheless, if you rent a car, allow more time than you think you need.

The assignments on my Workbook Page of Niche Clarification Resources should have opened your eyes to the blog that your readers see. Now that you have a good idea of who your readers are, let’s look at what your niche is. Once again, I’ll be using an off-campus activity book to give you homework that I simply cannot fit into a guest post. I encourage you to take your time, sleep on your decisions, and make sure they are a good fit for your passions.

This week’s assignments are much easier than the previous batch, so you can breathe a sigh of relief. Your first task is to identify your role in your blog. You’ll find a list of possibilities at Resources for Organizing Your Themes. You may find that selecting one is difficult; there may be several. 

Now comes the fun part. Your objective is to analyze your current blog themes to determine the combination of all themes that are prevalent, and therefore represent your present niche.

Pets Teach Kids Responsibility

Someone, who I was close to, called me up to say that she wanted to get rid of her daughter’s rabbit. Her nine-year old child was no longer interested in caring for the rabbit because she got a cat, and she liked the new pet better.

This person knows that I write about pets and wildlife and wanted to know if I knew of a place where they could unload the pet. I told her that replacing one pet for another is a bad lesson to teach a child, and that my site, Pet News and Views doesn’t list adoptable pets. My site covers animal welfare and pet care.

All Animals Need Our Love

When I was 13, I took zoology classes at the Bronx Zoological Society. I grew up in the Bronx, and went to the zoo every Saturday to learn about animals. In the summer, when I graduated from the program, I had a choice to either volunteer at the Bronx Zoo or the Central Park Zoo.
