Great post, Yvonne. I don't think it's possible to be completely anonymous on the internet. If someone really wants to track down an author, it's entirely possible, anonymous or not.

And I agree that an anonymous post or comment or even a review is suspect. I think a good rule of thumb is not to say anything online that you wouldn't say to someone's face. (My mother used to tell us "Don't say something behind someone's back that you wouldn't say to his/her face.")

I do think that the internet gives people a feeling of anonynomity that is unwarranted. I'm not sure why that is but people seem to be more comfortable saying or posting things online that they would never say or show "in real life." And the irony is that things never really go away once posted online. Even if you delete a comment or post, it can still come back to haunt you.

I generally think that it's best to use your real names on the internet. As you said, it's easy enough for people to track you back. More than one blogger has been "outed" - sometimes with disastrous consequences.

But I do understand that there are times when people need to remain anonymous - whistle blowers or political activists in a dangerous situation. So I guess it really depends on the circumstances.

@Lorie - absolutely - never say anything online (or offline) behind people's backs! And, know that when you are online, you may as well be shouting from the rooftop. I wish more people would stop, think and then choose not to comment because it serves no good purpose.

@Vicki - absolutely - the circumstances do count. But, as we've said, you can't be truly anonymous online. You will be outed. Offline, you can choose to remain anonymous - for the very reasons you note.

Thank-you for the reminder! :)

Great essay!

I, & Nikita Cat, proud Citizen Journalists both, have been blogging since 2002, and all 4 of my blogs, over the years, including my personal blog, and the Cat blog, have this in the sidebar:

PERMISSIONS: Original Content of this blog is Copyrighted, and owned, by Kiril G. Kundurazieff, 2010 - Present...

I am/was The Cycling Dude (Retired 2010), The Mad Macedonian, as well my Cats Mr. Nikita & Elvira Mistress of Felinity ( Well, OK, we all know that Nikita & Elvira do all their own blogging, at Meowsings of an Opinionated Pussycat ) as do many other critter bloggers, but some folks just have a hard time grasping the truth of this... ;-D ).

When The Cycling Dude used to, and The Mad Macedonian, and the Cats, leave comments hither & yon, we know that readers may follow our link back to our blogs, and it is a very simple matter, for anyone who takes the time, to see the above message.

Even on Nikita's Facebook Page my name appears in parenthesis next to his. ;-D

There have been several times over the years where I, or Nikita, or Elvira, have directly taken on people, websites, and organizations, over something or other, or done exposes that have stirred up the community we live in, and our readers. ;-D

We don't mind taking responsibility for what we write, especially the more journalistic in nature material which we encourage readers to comment on, such as opinions, exposes, website, event, book, product, and film, reviews, and more.

We want to be taken seriously, as Critter Bloggers, and bloggers in general, and this honesty, and transparency, has paid off, and continues to pay off, in ways I never dreamed of a decade ago.

Where this will all lead me in the future, who knows?

Paul Sanchez

Love what you are doing with the blog man!
