With much thanks to Jody Devere who passed this info on to me, let's talk pets and spending. Some of that $47 billion is definitely coming out of my pocket! How about you?
According to a press release put out by the Global Pet Expo, being held in Orland, FL on March 25-27th, "The pet industry grew 5% last year and is projected to grow another 5% this year..."
Their information comes from the American Pet Products Association (APPA) which just released it annual comprehensive review of spending data and reports. The report shows that overall spending in the pet industry grew from $43.2 billion in 2008 to just over $45.5 billion in 2009. Yes, that's BILLION, with a capital B.
But hey, we're pet bloggers, you and me. We know this stuff! We're pet Moms and Dads, we buy the stuff the APPA talks about. We're all devoted to our pets, aren't we? Of course we are. And that's why BlogPaws is THE place to be - because we all want a peek behind the curtain of those pet brands (yay! for all the great brands who are sponsoring us! click their links, visit their sites, and be polite - they're going to be at BlogPaws to meet YOU!).
Wish I could go to the Global Pet Expo, but I have lots to do in preparation for BlogPaws. As do Tom and Caroline and our fabulous committee, which you will be hearing more about in the coming weeks.
As the press release says, "The demand for new products to make life more enjoyable for both pets and their owners is driving the emergence of new products and trends such as 'natural' and high-tech."
Bring your pets, bring your questions, bring yourselves to BlogPaws so we can learn from you - how to serve you better as we build BlogPaws into a resource for pet bloggers everywhere.

How does that compare to, say, spending on human kid toys and products? Anyone know?

Great question, Dr. V.
According to WSJ Market Watch, spending on kids toys in 2008 was only $21.7 Billion! http://www.marketwatch.com/story/us-toy-sales-down-2-this-year-2009-08-17
I didn't immediately find a breakdown for how much we spend to FEED our two-legged kids, though.

Yvonne and Tom--Thanks for your encouragement earlier this year! I've scaled back my original idea of an indoor dog park to Fetch, Run, and Play!, a portable dog play area for dog-owning residents of retirement communities. Even if these residents have difficulty walking or limited mobility, Fetch, Run, and Play! offers a weather-protected, enclosed space for seniors and their guests to exercise their dogs in a convenient, safe environment.
My ideal customers are retirement communities looking to enhance the amenities available to their residents, or established dog-service businesses looking to expand their market share with a with a unique offering senior living facilities.
The big work is already done and the concept is ready for implementation. Be the first among your pet-care competition to offer this amenity to dog-loving seniors!
Perhaps one of your readers will set one up at BlogPaws West 2010!
